1957 -

November 24
Harry Belafonte was at #1 on the UK chart with "Mary's Boy Child", the first single to sell over 1 million copies in Great Britain. It stayed at the top for seven weeks.

1958 -

November 24
The Kingston Trio became the very first group to ever have an album reach the top of the US chart. Before them, only solo artists had hit number one. They would go on to record a total of fourteen Top Ten albums and an additional five would enter the Top 25.

1962 -

Dion hit the US Top Ten for the fifth time since he left The Belmonts with "Love Came to Me".

1964 -

November 24
Paul McCartney's father, Jim, marries widow Angela Williams, giving Paul a five-year-old step-sister, Ruth.

1965 -

The Young Rascals begin recording "Good Lovin'", which will rise to #1 in the US early next year. .

1966 -

The Beatles begin recording sessions for the "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" LP by laying down tracks for "Strawberry Fields Forever". The song however, doesn't make the 1967 album, but would appear the following year on "Magical Mystery Tour".

Several thousand teenagers battle with Kansas City police after a James Brown concert is halted because of what officials call "obscene dances being performed on the stage."

ABC-TV debuts its late-night Rock show, In Concert, put together by The Monkees' producer, Don Kirshner. The first show stars Alice Cooper, Chuck Berry, Blood, Sweat And Tears, Poco and the Allman Brothers Band.

After cracking Billboard's Top Ten with "It Don't Come Easy" (#4) and "Back Off Boogaloo" (#9), Ringo Starr reaches number one with "Photograph", a song he co-wrote with George Harrison.

1979 -

A pair of Pop music divas, Donna Summer and Barbra Streisand combined their voices to produce the top tune in the US, "No More Tears (Enough Is Enough)". It's Summer's third number one single and Streisand's fourth. The record made #3 in the UK.

1985 -

Rock pioneer Big Joe Turner died of kidney failure at the age of 74. Turner was one of the first artists to ever play Rock and Roll when he recorded "Shake, Rattle and Roll" in 1954, although Bill Haley And His Comets had a bigger hit with their cover version. Turner also recorded "Sweet Sixteen" before B.B. King, and wrote "Honey Hush", later copied by Jerry Lee Lewis and Paul McCartney. Turner earned his nickname from his 6'2", 300 lbs stature.

1991 -

45 year old Freddie Mercury, lead singer of Queen, died of bronchopneumonia induced by HIV, at his home in London, England, only one day after publicly acknowledging he had the disease.

KISS drummer Eric Carr died of a cerebral hemorrhage while hospitalized for cancer. He was 41.

Cyndi Lauper marries actor David Thornton, with Little Richard providing the wedding music.

1994 -

The inaugural MTV European Music Awards are hosted by Tom Jones in Berlin, Germany. Canada's Bryan Adams is named Best Male Artist, Mariah Cary is Best Female Artist and Aerosmith are named Best Rock Band.

Junior Walker, who lead The All Stars on several Top 40 hits including "Shotgun", "What Does It Take" and "These Eyes", died of cancer at the age of 64.

2005 -

The Anti-Defamation League demanded that Michael Jackson apologize for allegedly making a series of anti-Semitic comments on a voicemail message, which were aired on ABC's Good Morning America. Jackson's camp denied the allegations.

2009 -

The Rolling Stones began cashing in on British singing sensation Susan Boyle's rendition of their hit "Wild Horses" by re-issuing their original version which was first released 40 years ago this month.

2011 -

A New York memorabilia store announced that it would auction a "to do" list written by John Lennon which included waiting for the HBO cable guy, fixing the hook on the bathroom door, making sure there was enough marmalade in the house, and purchasing Margaret Trudeau's book Beyond Reason. The hand-written, one page list was expected to fetch over $3,000.

2012 -

Earl "Speedo" Carroll, the lead singer for The Cadillacs on their 1955 hit "Speedo", died from complications of diabetes at the age of 75. Carroll later sang with The Coasters for about two decades before reuniting with a new incarnation of the Cadillacs.

2014 -

November 24
Bob Dylan performed for an audience of one, superfan Fredrik Wikingsson, at Philadelphia's Academy of Music. The concert was part of film series Experiment Ensam, which chronicles individuals as they experience special events they would normally share with large groups, alone.

2017 -

Mitch Margo, a founding member of The Tokens, the doo-wop foursome behind the 1961 hit "The Lion Sleeps Tonight", died of natural causes at the age of 70.
